As we start the new year (2024), we look back at our moments of victory (pistol brace ban overturned, soon to be 28 constitutional carry states, more 2cd amendment cases being heard by the Supreme Court) and times of trepidation (upcoming election, random ATF bans of products, media portrayal of tragedy). Throughout everything NRA has continued to provided training and education, sponsored conventions and competitions, and maintained its history of being a legislative and lobbying advocate for the second amendment. Two years ago, I had the opportunity to begin serving on the board (an unpaid position) and began learning about facets of the NRA that most people do not realize exists.
Each month I will explain a unique facet of this organization beginning with the political grading. One of the reasons that politicians respect and fear the NRA is that each election cycle the NRA scrutinizes the voting history, interviews, and responsiveness of politicians to the 2cd amendment. Based on these criteria, the NRA assigns a grade that they report to their membership to help inform the voting decisions. This process holds politicians accountable and prevents them from just giving lip service to the 2cd amendment. Without this there would be fewer members of congress, senators, judges, and presidents who support our rights. The organization within the NRA that spearheads this effort is called the ILA (Institute for Legislative Action), and their requests for funding are invaluable to maintaining this aspect of accountability.
So why would I pursue another term with the NRA if it is unpaid position? The short answer is at the age of 47 I can be around to be the catalyst for the next era of change the NRA needs. Because I am out there with you, the tactical shooters and instructors, I am able to bring up issues that might otherwise be off the radar of the board members.
Today, at the legislative committee meeting, I provided information on the UTM / Simunition ban that affects civilians participating in force-on-force training like active shooter, church security office, and shoot/no shoot training. There were no other board members who actively use this type of training, so the rest of the attendees were unaware of this ATF ban. During the finance committee I was able to verify and review the NRA’s financial data ensuring that we are spending our dollars in the best way possible. I try and attend as many committee meetings as possible so I can both learn and weigh-in on issues that affect all of us in the 2cd amendment community. I hope you will continue to follow me and consider voting for me in February of 2025 when I am up for re-election.
As always, stay safe and know I have your 6.
