Let's Talk About ...

The 2024 NRA Annual Meeting

On the evening before the 2024 NRA Annual Meeting in Dallas, TX, my wife received a phone call from David Coy, then the Second Vice President. We knew David socially for years before my joining the NRA through Freemasonry and Shrine. David asked if she would be willing to present something at the meeting and, having no previous experience attending the event and no historical reason to distrust Dave, she said yes. To ask someone to "present something" can have a number of meanings from making an introduction to handing something to someone - which is what she assumed was meant. The rest I will let her present in her own words:

We were eating with the rest of the board members and their spouses. There was probably 15 minutes left before the meeting.  Dave came in and pulled me to the side and said, "We're in a hurry and only have a few minutes.  Here, sign this and I will give you a copy. This is what you are presenting." I signed a piece of paper, he handed me a copy, and he and his entourage went rushing out the door.

It was at this moment I realized that I was being tricked into something.  I read the proposal and my stomach dropped.  I showed Isaac who agreed with me that I was being set up for a disaster. This was a proposal that I would never have willingly made.  Isaac and I were both against it. Concerned for me, Isaac went out to the hallway to contact friends in attendance with a background in asset protection in case I needed to be extracted from an angry mob. Meanwhile, I looked around the room realizing I was being watched by the remaining members of the old guard. Then I found my solution.

I noticed that the wife of a key reform member was still sitting there eating. She and I had a friendly rapport, and I genuinely liked both. It was not unusual for me to be seen talking to her.  I sat down next to her and quietly showed her what I had been tricked into "presenting".  I tried to remain as calm and seemingly unruffled as possible. She was immediately alarmed and also very against the proposal.

She asked me what I was going to do, I told her they had taken off with the proposal, and I didn't know how to stop it from going to the floor.  "What are you doing to do?", she asked.  "I'm doing it," I replied.  She didn't understand at first and again asked me what I intended to do.  "I'm going to make sure it is properly debated at the meeting," I said.

"How? No one was expecting them to actually pull this. They aren't ready. This could bankrupt us. What are you going to do?", she continued.  Again, I said, "I'm doing it." She looked at me confused. I explained, "I am being watched, but I am just sitting here talking, one wife to another, about a proposal that is about to be presented. One of those wives just happens to be the wife of a key member of the opposition. A wife who will now go and tell her husband what is going on, so he can warn the others, so they can be ready when this hits the fan." I saw her process what I just said and what it meant, then she was out the door.

Isaac came back a moment later to retrieve me and let me know that our friends were ready. Then we set off to the meeting. Good news travels fast. Bad news travels at the speed of light. Within moments we had three different people ask us if this was really happening. We confirmed it was. I looked at Isaac and said, "I've done what I could to fix this.  Dave used me. I won't forget it."

The events of the meeting are public record.  You can watch the videos online. Honestly, the reformers did an amazing job in defeating the proposal and exposing Dave on the spot. I considered speaking myself, but I was asked to stay in the middle of my protection detail. As soon as the meeting was over, they had me surrounded and out the door so fast I was impressed.

Less than an hour later I received a terse phone call from David Coy attempting to summon me to a meeting.  I refused to go.  He called back and Isaac took my phone and told him off and said in no uncertain terms would I be summoned by him in any manner.  My only contact with Dave from that day on was restrained and polite, if unavoidable.

I received no apology as a result of what occurred that day until October 4, 2025, after the events of that day became fodder for a yet another public forum, and my husband and I were once again attacked by people who did not know the whole story. I thanked him for the apology and walked away. It was too little, too late. I cannot and will not trust David Coy ever again.  Not after how his machinations damaged Isaac's reputation, and mine.

Only a handful of people on the NRA Board knew the whole story of how the board members received the warning they did. Now it is laid forth for everyone to see and - I am sure for some - to criticize.  I did the best I could in what seemed like an impossible situation. Perhaps you would have handled it differently. I hope you are never put in a situation where you must try.

We have always tried to work with everyone and consider all points of view before reaching what we feel are the best, most responsible, and most logical decisions.  Sometimes that common sense may seem in conflict with the emotions of the situation, but we would never support any proposal, or vote, that does not have the NRA, its employees', and its membership's best interest at heart.
