The NRA board consists of 76 board members. 75 are elected over a 3-year period (25 being elected each year) with an annual 76th Board member decided by the members at the Annual Meeting (April or May each year). This is a large board and begs the question of if it should be this large.
(Full disclosure, I was initially the 76th board member and received a 2-year additional term due solely to the death of another board member. I'm not rich, famous, a politician or a gun manufacturer. I am here as an average American by the grace of the membership.)
About 32% of Americans own a firearm according to recent polls and we have 635 members of congress serving 260,0000,000 voting members of the United States. We have that many representatives so that various geographies and people can have their voices represented in government. Within the 2cd Amendment we have voices ranging from competitive shooting, hunting, personal security, and modern militia, preferences for shotguns, pistols, hunting rifles, AR15's, ancient and modern military firearms and the list goes on. Without the various members of the board, we would not likely have your area of interest represented with a voice.
My personal passions entail tactical shooting, personal protection, and a broad view of the scope of the 2cd Amendment. I train regularly and encourage others to do so to maintain proficiency and effectiveness. I am one of the few board members who holds these passions and without such a large board people like me would likely be without a voice.
If you have an interest in having your interest or voice represented, you can be a board member as long as you have been a life member for at least 10 years. I encourage as many like me to seek out this path so we can ensure our voices are promoted for years to come.
