I recently had the opportunity to talk at the Night Operations Summit in Texas this last November thanks to Greenline Tactical. I gave a status update on the NRA and why we need to prevail in fixing the organization.
If we look at other 2cd Amendment organizations (full disclosure, I am a member of several), they largely focus on corrective action through lawsuits. While this is important in the preservation of our rights there are a lot of areas that get missed.
The NRA begins at the legislative level to prevent laws getting passed that would usurp the 2cd Amendment by working with and influencing legislators at the Federal and State level. The NRA also lobbies on behalf of organizations involved in the 2cd Amendment and companies impacted by potential negative legislation.
In addition, the NRA provides the grading program that evaluates current and past votes by legislators and publishes voting recommendations based on their performance. The NRA holds accountable those that are voting for or against your rights and publishes those records.
Finally, the NRA provides a training program for new gun owners. The other 2cd Amendment organizations don't have a historical or successful training program to facilitate competence among new gun owners. While I might have issues with the antiquated nature of some of the training it is fundamentally sound. Without the NRA we lose that outreach and progression towards competence.
The NRA provides advice and protection as well as a legal fund defense for Gun Ranges, an essential location for the practice of our 2cd Amendment. The anti-gun groups have long known if they can prevent you from using your guns than you won't be a threat.
For these reasons and many others, we should revitalize the NRA, shape it into the organization we need and continue the 150-year tradition of training, advocacy, and advice for the 2cd Amendment.
